The Maccabees // Pelican

The Maccabees gear up for the release of their third album, Given To The Wild, next year in pretty much the same way they left us. Pelican has all the usual Maccabees hit-making features (earnest harmonies, repeated lyrics, surging new wave riffs and cloud bursting choruses), while building in some African rhythms and spectral production occasionally hinted at on Wall of Arms.

While it doesn't quite thrill me in the way No Kind Words did, the unfettered enthusiasm that spills from everything the band do is enough. See what you think below.

The Maccabees // Given To The Wild

The Maccabees keep getting better and better, which bodes well for the release of their next record Given To The Wild, due for release on January 9th. The accompanying teaser trailer sees the band in the studio, as well as suggestive existential imagery which may, or more likely may not, be a clue to the new album's subject matter.

Christmas Countdown // The Maccabees :: Walking In The Air

In a valiant attempt to trump Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry as No Action's favourite Christmas song, perennially under-rated The Maccabees have recorded a haunting, dramatic version of Walking In The Air. Staying true to the original, it's take off at just under two minutes in is spectacular, while Orlando's voice is a perfect fit with its mix of innocence and unhinged portent.

Local favourites // Babeshadow

Having bagged a lugubrious tour support slot with the increasingly omnipresent Florence and gigging alongside fellow London success stories Golden Silvers and The Maccabees, Babeshadow are pretty successfully crafting a first class career for themselves.

Having formed mere months ago this marks progress indeed and, while early demos Sea Serpent and Darling are pleasantly lilting three minute vignettes of city loving, the 60s song-writing and hooks promise plenty. One hopes the Babes choose the more scenic, challenging route to success for longevity's sake but, for now at least, there's enough to love to make the days seem brighter and the summer seem closer. Plus, they'll be appearing alongside the incredible Summer Camp on April 8th at London's Lexington. Reason enough to raise the Babeshadow alarm in No Action's view.
