Daily Life // Alabaster

In a video directed by Former Bullies, Daily Life jive around like The Big O's kids and crank out a brilliant two and a half minute lo-fi pop song. Reminiscent of The Answering Machine (RIP) and The Pixies, tracks like Alabaster and Reunion from their earlier self-titled EP are smart, effortlessly catchy and destined for ears beyond the M60.

Sea Pinks // Dead Seas

While Veronica Falls, Girls Names and Spectrals all made the cut in our list of the top 50 albums of 2011, the Sea Pinks' 'Dead Seas' missed out.

Having relistened to the Belfast trio's second record almost exclusively today, we feel we may have made an error of judgement / lapse of concentration / temporary insanity, and would like to rectify this in a small way by highlighting its Black Lips on a coastal stroll-esque garage excellence here. Their kaleidoscopic visual treat for Fountain Tesserae is below, as well as the whole album to stream.

We Have Band // What's Yours, What's Mine

Just in time for Christmas, We Have Band have popped up with a little acoustic gift ahead of their second full length 'The Ternion' due in January on Naïve. The track will feature as an iTunes additional extra but you lucky people can enjoy it below, as well as the first track from the record Where Are Your People.

Balam Acab vs The Weeknd // Big Boy Outside (TLS Mash)

With an R&B groove that hints of Usher's You Make Me Wanna, this mash of Balam Acab's See Birds and The Weeknd's Outside from The Leaving Scene takes the best of both worlds to create a gorgeous new one in Big Boy Outside. Check out the track below, as well as 'Echoes of Silence', the third EP from The Weeknd, here.

50 albums of 2011 // 10 - 1

At some point in 2011, the release of each of these albums made us not want to listen to anything else, but more so than any other with White Denim's 'D'. 50 albums of 2011 // 20 - 11

From SBTRKT's soulful dub step to Yuck's 90s leaning grunge pop, from Bon Iver's epic folk through to Timber Timbre's dramatic noir, it's testament to the top 10 we've picked that these records didn't quite make it in.

50 Albums of 2011 // 40 - 31

The second installment. Not that it was planned that way, but this second set of ten also have some of our favourite videos of the year; from Dominant Legs' lesson in joy-seeking, through Metronomy's paper bird to Ganglians' psych-dystopia. Plus, we had to include two from Shabazz Palaces' awesomely titled/sounding record. Enjoy, with 30 to 21 to come tomorrow.

Arthur Beatrice // What We Hoped To Achieve

London quartet Arthur Beatrice are currently in the process of producing their debut record, and here is a Radiohead-esque glimpse behind the scenes of their studio Flesh + Bone. What We Hoped To Achieve is dramatic, cultured indie music, akin to The Smiths or Echo & the Bunnymen of yesterday, or Wild Beasts of today.

The band have been fairly secretive thus far in their media output, although not in the flirtatious sense, hence perhaps their absence from any BBC or Brits lists. Instead their focus on collaborative art shows and developing a set of tracks which will see them garner plaudits for years rather than months is one which makes us very excited about 2012.

The Black Keys // Gold on The Ceiling and Lonely Boy (live)

No one bangs the drums harder than Pat Carney, and no one does gawp-fest solos like Dan Auerbach. These are facts. Check out evidence of both in The Black Keys' two US talk-show appearances below, with a quick intro to Lonely Boy courtesy of Steve Buscemi. Big time now, huh?

Fanzine // Tough

We've been anticipating Fanzine's debut record since, well, April Fool's Day, when they made an appearance as our local favourites. It seems the time is nigh.

Tough maintains the 90s slacker influences of earlier tracks such as Susan or Roman Holiday, but perhaps with additional fine tuning and a sprinkling of west coast pop a la Girls. Check out the video and a couple of earlier tracks below, while you can catch the band at a few London dates before Christmas.

Dec 15th - TLOBF's Ones to Watch, Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, w/ Niki & the Dove, Outfit, Theme Park and Amusement

Django Django // Default

Is 2012 going to be Django Django's year? The BBC don't seem to think so given their recent Sound of 2012 long-list. We however, hope they're wrong.

The band's odd-pop shone at The Royal Albert Hall in support of Metronomy back in October, with Default taking the lead from their most prominent early release WOR, adding some DEVO jerkiness and embedding itself in your mind's ear.

Take a listen below, and if you like that, we'd also recommend Waveforms available through their Soundcloud.

Caged Animals // Piles Of $$$

Directed by the spectacularly named Ace Norton, the new video for Caged Animals' Piles of $$$ sees Vincent Cacchione and bandmate/partner Magali Charron go through various stages of happiness, unhappiness, masochism, and more unhappiness, playfully juxtaposed by Caged Animals' auto-tuned croon and synth-led R&B.

Check out the video below, while Norton's other 3 minute flicks for Lucky Numbers label mates Friends and Darwin Deez are also a must see. Piles of $$$ is taken from Caged Animals' new 'Eat Their Own' LP, which you can also listen to below.

25 November 2011

Boy Friend // Egyptian Wrinkle

Boy Friend is the new project from Sleep ∞ Over’s Sarah Brown and Christa Palazzolo, and their trade is reverb-laden, spectral electronics of the Memoryhouse ilk. Egyptian Wrinkle's ambient groove is the title track from their forthcoming debut out on 6 February 2012 through Hell, Yes! Records.

Boy Friend // Egyptian Wrinkle

CYMBALS // Intense Kids

CYMBALS produced one of our records of the year in 'Unlearn' and, as if to remind us of that fact as we build towards the inevitable wrap-up list making months, have sprung this minimal new-wave gem on us.

Intense Kids is taken from an as yet untitled new EP being readied for the new year, and was recorded aboard Lighthouse 95, scene of Mazes' highly successful efforts earlier this year.

Echo Lake // Buried at Sea

There's one thing I'm sure of having watched the dream-like, Natalia Stuyk-directed video for Echo Lake's latest track Buried at Sea, and that's that David Attenborough and his BBC buddies should get in touch immediately and ensure Echo Lake soundtrack all future Planet related programming.

Taken from the ambient-pop band's new 'Young Silence EP', the track is stunningly fluid and subtly uplifting, while the accompanying images are a thing of wistful beauty.

Palpitation // I'm Absent, You're Faraway

Just stumbled upon this Stockholm duo and, having come out of the trance induced by their debut record I'm Absent, You're Faraway, felt compelled to post. Palpitation have the wintry whispered vocals akin to fellow Swedes jj, however their sound is perhaps more traditionally along the Scandinavian indie pop lines, at times sparse and at others edging towards the epic, lovelorn melancholy of Wild Beasts.

How this record, released in June on Luxury, remained under my radar until now is beyond me; perhaps it's an easier fit with these cold November nights than the cold summer ones.

Palpitation - I´m Absent, You´re Faraway by EDPMC VICENTE 66

Eugene McGuiness // Lion

Wow! Eugene's back and has raided the cosmetic cabinet, got himself down to Bond Street and returned with a suave new rockabilly-cum-advertising executive styling. What with the mesmerising modern dance accompaniment and the fact this track is making a pretty successful late bid for my top 10 tracks of the year, the video for Lion makes for a real good time.

18 November 2011

The Maccabees // Pelican

The Maccabees gear up for the release of their third album, Given To The Wild, next year in pretty much the same way they left us. Pelican has all the usual Maccabees hit-making features (earnest harmonies, repeated lyrics, surging new wave riffs and cloud bursting choruses), while building in some African rhythms and spectral production occasionally hinted at on Wall of Arms.

While it doesn't quite thrill me in the way No Kind Words did, the unfettered enthusiasm that spills from everything the band do is enough. See what you think below.

Spectrals // Bad Penny

Spectrals
Bad Penny
Released: 17th October
Wichita

Great name for an album that isn’t it? Whether it’s self referential relating to the well known phrase or saying ‘bad pennies always come back’ or ‘there’s two sides to every coin’, whether it’s satirical commentary on our current economic strife, or whether it’s a nod to Steve Albini and Big Black’s fiery Chicago punk track of the same name all adds a curiosity to the record, a trait all record names should have as far as we’re concerned. Knowing Louis Jones’ aka Spectrals’ previous output and propensity for melding sonic ingredients, all three are likely to have figured somewhere down the line.

As for the content, fewer questions are asked. Since the early and wholly justified buzz of 2009’s Leave Me Be and 2010’s ‘Extended Play’, backed up by multiple split 7”s, extensive touring and support slots, the influences of 60s pop, soul and doo wop, plus the occasional garage smack, have been worn firmly on the sleeve. A trait often criticised, but one which if done well and with ingenuity is to be admired. The high points on the record take these touchstones and buff them into something beautiful. Lead single Get a Grip’s driving pop provides a plucky undertone to Jones’ lovelorn, meanderings as he confides “I find it hard to get my head out of the right side of the bed”, while the jangling lilt of Jones’ guitar on Doing Time has a timelessness that may sound simple but is missed so often by others attempting a similar feat.

Spectrals - Get A Grip by Slumberland Records

Unfortunately, there are aspects of this debut that drift without making much impact, which is perhaps where the delving into multiple musical pots makes for an inevitably mixed whole. Where Spectrals’ live shows and Jones’ charisma conjure a fuzzy warmth and throwback atmosphere, at times the record is a tad mundane and predictable, making its low ebbs such as Many Happy Returns pass almost unnoticed compared to the earlier teenage crush and garage blast high of Big Baby. Confetti has the lyrical intricacy and pop playfulness of Alex Turner or Paul Weller over classic 60s beat pop, however its peak is followed by the easy listening snooze of Luck Is There to be Pushed, which is reminiscent of Simply Red and is rendered impotent alongside the far superior tracks Jones is clearly capable of. Two sides to the coin indeed, but on one there’s plenty to admire.

The Black Keys // Lonely Boy

The Black Keys' records are the perfect travelling companion; occasionally ragged, often loud, but always with a determined urgency. Much like Dan's own beard experimentations and Patrick's drumming. As if to acknowledge this, the band's new record is entitled El Camino, and was announced earlier this month accompanied by a brilliant trailer.

El Camino is available from December 6th, while Lonely Boy is our on November 25th for Record Store Day's "Back to Black" Friday.

Summer Camp // Down

Summer Camp's Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley have released a timely video to Down for two reasons: Firstly, it's almost Halloween and the annual excuse to dress up, bite people's necks and stick your hands in jelly is upon us, while secondly, I've been lustily admiring the works of Gif animators already this week, such as this.

Great video, excellent pop song, and very much looking forward to their debut record.

Friends // I'm His Girl

This is a mighty, mighty baseline, and with vocals reminiscent of early Gwen Stefani, if Friends keep producing tracks this infectious there're going to be all over 2012 like a rash.

'King DJ // U Gon And Dun It

Brown Brogues' Mark Vernon has been pushing the pseudonym 'King DJ for a while, and now he's rubber stamped it with the demo release of the sludgy, growling U Gon And Dun It. Sounding much like his aforementioned duo project, minus the primative, thunderous drums but with added 6am regret, the King is promising a demo release per week all the way through to Christmas.

Video Games // Lana del Rey (Balam Acab Remix)

There's a hell of a lot of vitriol flying around about Lana del Rey, largely focusing on claims of style over substance / more press shots than songs / manufactued indie-doll fakery / who the hell does she think she is anyway.

With this incredibly sublime remix, Balam Acab may have done little to halt the del Rey media train, but at least she'll be getting the odd positive mention in the blogosphere, even if it is by association. Listen below, and to the original here.

Nurses // Fever Dreams

While the video to Nurses' Fever Dreams looks like something even Klaxons rejected in their most 'enlightened' state of minds, or an outtake from a Skins in which those pesky kids take too much acid and Harry Enfield shows up at the end looking disgruntled and comic as he struggles to act disgruntled and comic, the actual song is way beyond such lowly comparisons.

Kinder links can be made to Yeasayer and Animal Collective, as the Portland trio of Aaron Chapman, John Bowers and James Mitchell conjure a dream-like strangeness in their tribal pop. The album Dracula is out now on Dead Oceans.

Blouse // Videotapes

While the opening sounds of Videotapes recall a stretched cassette tape you just know is going to be trapped insight your stereo forevermore, 13 seconds in everything changes, as Portland trio Blouse, compliled of Charlie Hilton, Patrick Adams and UMO’s Jordan Portrait, open up a world of woozy 80s synths and troubled nostalgia. It's a confusing yet enigmatic experience, one they'll hopefully continue on their forthcoming debut, out in November on Captured Tracks. Listen and download below.

Local Favourites // Shells

It's been a while since our last local favourites, but a return was inevitable once we heard the Balaeric pulse and crystalline beats of London's Shells. Following his Pastels EP earlier this year, electronic producer Shells' (Khalid Rafique) Arctic is so clean and crisp it's making us feel decidedly grubby on this dull autumn evening, a feeling that is only intensifying with multiple, multiple replays. Go enjoy it for yourself below.

Jessie Ware // Strangest Feeling

We've been in love with Jessie Ware for a long time thanks to her various collaborations, not least the beauteous Valentine with Sampha, and 2010's Nervous with SBTRKT. Strangest Feeling, released on limited edition 10" vinyl on November 28th via PMR Records, is the perfect showcase of her sensual, layered vocal over minimal beats, and a tasty teaser for the debut LP to come.

The Maccabees // Given To The Wild

The Maccabees keep getting better and better, which bodes well for the release of their next record Given To The Wild, due for release on January 9th. The accompanying teaser trailer sees the band in the studio, as well as suggestive existential imagery which may, or more likely may not, be a clue to the new album's subject matter.

Craft Spells // Your Tomb

The nostalgic, winsome dream-pop of Craft Spells' debut record Idle Labor would nestle perfectly alongside Orange Juice's Rip It Up or soundtracking a John Hughes film. I'm just pleased it happened in my era, not someone else's. Enjoy the Aaron Beckum directed noir video to accompany new single Your Tomb below.

28 September 2011

Bleached // Think of You

Yeah it's loose, it's ragged, and leaning so heavily on its influences they're at breaking point. But Think of You is pretty damn wild.

The video directed by Lana Kim & Jennifer Clavin sees the Bleached girls pitching up at various venues, wowing various boys including No Age and Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti bassist Tim Koh, before jumping into a swimming pool of a questionable sanitary state. Sounds alright for a day's shift to us.

White Denim // Hot Thought

If there's one sure fact in life you can be certain of, it's that no-one does groove like White Denim do groove. This gospel truth is rubber stamped on Hot Thought, a B-side which sees the band reach for the auto-tune rather than the heavy feedback, which some early and ardent rocker fans may see as effeminate, but which Stevie Wonder and James Brown may see as direct threats to their soul and funk crowns. The fact that the boys can pull off this sound with such effortless suavity is testament to their powers, and an indicator that they're coming out of the garage and on to somewhere far grander.

tUnE-yArDs - Gangsta

Perhaps my favourite track off my favourite record of the year so far now has a suitably restless video accompaniment. Self directed by Merill Garbus, an artist who clearly knows her own mind and artistic vision, the result is a collage of black and white scenes ranging from ghost story torch shots to free dance to rail-side graffiti. Gangsta.

Male Bonding // Tame The Sun

Male Bonding's video for new single Tame the Sun, lifted from second LP Endless Now, takes you on a journey through the photographed eyes and mouths of childhood. The animated mouths and cropped frame make the whole experience decidedly more sinister than it sounds, while the track's opening bass riff and layered reverb make this track a real standout from the record.

The band are currently touring with The History of Apple Pie, and come to London on October 17th. Watch the video and download the song below.

Dominant Legs // Hoop of Love

Hannah Hunt is getting a lot of experience travelling in cars in music videos. Following this jaunt for her band Dominant Legs' Hoop of Love vid she jumped in boyfriend Christoper Owens' ride for Girls' Honey Bunny.

As idyllic, feel-amazing pop songs go, it doesn't get much better than this. Driving with the top down, jumping into lakes, shooting catapults, eating grapes, and any other number of perfect summer pursuits fit for young lovers are crammed into the video, while the song itself screams optimism in a way only the Californians can.

Check out Hoop of Love, earlier track About My Girls and Hunt's other starring rolein Girls' Honey Bunny below, while Dominant Legs' debut LP is out on Lefse Records in the UK on 14th November, which you can stream on Hype here.

Peggy Sue // Song and Dance

Peggy Sue put in a brilliant turn at Rough Trade earlier this week to announce the release of their new LP Acrobats. By all accounts, it's a much beefier, mature sounding output, with bluesy electric guitars and prominent, Dodos style drums adding to the darker subject matter of the tracks. Enjoy a Song and Dance, released this week on Wichita, below.

Breton // The Commission

South London collective of film and music makers Breton have remixed the likes of Local Natives and Chapel Club, toured alongside the recently out of sight but never out of mind Tom Vek, and over the past year have released a series of inspired EPs of atmospheric trip-hop and oppressive post rock, with electronic, occasionally dubby overtones.

The Commission announces sees the band coming out of the Lab and readying the release of their debut LP with a slower tempo but equally enthralling beats, plus some stunning visuals from collaborator Stuart Sinclair. Check out the video and an early favourites of ours The Well and December below.

Lana del Rey // Blue Jeans

The lovely Lana del Rey has returned with a video for Blue Jeans, the flip side to July's Video Games. Whilst the track doesn't have the instant charm of the A side single, it's not without its delights, with her femme fatale ramped up to 10 as she declares "I will love you 'til the end of time". To our eyes, there's even a hint of Pretty Woman era Julia Roberts with added attitude in the final shot. Check out the video below.

First Aid Kit // The Lion's Roar

This teaser trailer from First Aid Kit bodes seriously, seriously well for new record The Lion's Roar. It's not due until January 2012, but with guest appearances confirmed from Conor Oberst and Nate Walcott it's sure to brighten even the darkest winter nights. Check out the video from Mike Mogis' studio below.

Tokyo Police Club // All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover)

Tokyo Police Club do a great job on covers, as proved with their take on Bill Squier's Detroit Has a Skyline for A.V. Club lst year. Lately the band have embarked on a project for Polaroid; 10 days, 10 years, 10 covers. Or to be more expilcit, in 10 days the band are covering 10 tracks from the years 2001 through to 2010. Having taken on Queens of the Stone Age and Moby, TPC opted for LCD Soundsystem's All My Friends for 2007, with spectacular results. Check out all the tracks below and on the Polaroid site here.

Lana del Rey // Video Games

Yeah it's old news now, but I have to post the beautiful Video Games from Lana del Rey. A lush, orchestral backing accompanies her lyrical suggestiveness, while the video suggest an almost despondent attitude to the relationship in question. With releases like this an an image crafted as a "gangster Nancy Sinatra", there's surely much more to come from Lana's locker.

TV Girl // Benny and the Jetts

The opening piano bars of TV Girl's Benny and the Jetts tell you all you need to know about this, their debut EP. Retro, quirky, and darned catchy. The product of Californian duo Trung Ngo and Brad Petering's efforts is 4 tracks of 60s girl group homage mixed with summery sampled beats, which reminds us of Lemonjelly and produces irrestibly enjoyable results. Download and listen to the full EP below.

The Drums // Money (Chad Valley Remix)

After their much debated hype, The Drums' debut album was never going to quite match the expectations many had placed upon the Brooklyn foursome. Following the loss of a member and rumours of a split, their second record is released today. To mark the occasion (or perhaps just because he fancied it) Chad Valley has recrafted Portamento's lead single Money in his own image, which you can check out and download below.

Mazes // Farewell Summer

Italian Beach Babes are about to issue an Eagulls / Mazes split 7" on October 24th, limited to just 500 copies and featurung 2 brand new tracks and 2 Wipers covers from each band.

Having caught a couple of tracks from Eagulls' set at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club, a last minute event following the cancellation of Beacons festival, Mazes realised both bands shared a common love of covering Wipers in their live shows, so decided they had to combine this affection on vinyl.

Check out both Mazes tracks below, and you can pre-order the release here.
